All About AC Tonnage

The sweltering summers and unpredicted weather like delayed monsoons make the summers unbearable. Once known as a luxury product, AC’s have now become a must have item for most households. We are always looking out for ways to keep our homes cool and healthy. During this time we often consider purchasing new air conditioners. While making any purchase decision on AC we must consider the cooling capacity and know all we can about AC tonnage. Through this article we will explain what is AC tonnage, what does it measure and any possible recommendations to be shared.

What is AC tonnage, why is it important and how is it measured?

Ton or tonnage is used in the area of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) to understand the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. Tonnage measures how much heat can an AC unit remove from a room in a given hour. Tonnage is measured in BTU (British Thermal Unit). So higher the ton of an AC greater will be the cooling capacity of the AC.

Tonnage is particularly important during while making a purchase decision as it would depend on your number of rooms, room size, number of people in a family as you wouldn’t want to invest in an AC that is too small or too big, An AC that is just right will help in optimum cooling. Given multiple options available in India both online and offline, there is something available for everyone.

With so many options and brand available, it becomes difficult to choose an AC that is best suitable for us. But here are some options that will help you come to a decision. Star ratings in an air conditioner usually refer to how efficiently the AC is converting electricity to cool air, 5 is the highest rating (means highly efficient in cooling the room) and lowest is 1 star rating. If you are considering purchasing a 1.5 ton split AC 5 Star or a 2 ton AC 5 Star, then choose the Panasonic Smart Inverter AC. 1.5 ton 5 star ACs are the most commonly used ones in Indian households. 1.5 ton AC is an ideal choice for rooms that are spread across 200-250 square feet. If you have big living room or master bedroom that is spread across 400 square feet, then going with a 2 ton AC would be the best choice. There are several brands available online that you can opt from like Panasonic, Voltas, Onida, Godrej and many more.

Now if you are new to this and are still trying to figure the best AC type for your room, then just multiply the square feet of your room times 25. This number equals to the total number of British Thermal Units you need to efficiently cool your room. As a next step divide the number by 12000 to understand the tonnage required to purchase a new air conditioner for your home.
